Popcorn: A Testament To Wholesome Food

With Love, From Rikki-Lee Schroder and Popcorn  (Alaska & Tiger, Too!)

About six years ago I noticed my Maltese, Popcorn, had increased his water intake and looked lethargic.

I took him to the vet who subsequently diagnosed him with kidney disease, and I was told nothing could improve his condition, that it was only “a matter of time.” He told me once the kidneys had been damaged they could never get better – their degeneration could only be slowed. He then recommended a commercial prescription diet and sent us on our way. I refused to believe there was nothing I could do and immediately started researching on the Internet. I returned to the vet with the information I’d found but was told he only learned
the basics of animal nutrition and wouldn’t be able to give me any advice. So without any help from the person that should’ve known everything about keeping Pops healthy, I decided to create a specialized diet plan.

After one month I noticed his water intake had reduced, his eyes looked brighter, and his trembling was less frequent. After another month his energy levels had peaked to the point that it was impossible for me to keep up with him when he sprinted around the house. At Pops’ next check-up, his blood test results revealed that his kidneys had improved dramatically. The vet couldn’t believe it. My little guy was healthy again! The special diet had helped him heal, so I continued with it to ensure that his kidneys would remain strong.

Two years passed and Pops was still in great condition. I wanted more information about natural animal health and
nutrition, and one of the first books I read was The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown. I started to think of food differently – not only how it tasted, but how it could aid the treatment of particular illnesses. Wholesome food is truly a miracle worker. There are many things in life that aren’t possible – improving the wellness of your animal isn’t one of them. I am truly blessed to have had my soul mate for almost nineteen happy and healthy years.

Pops, I love and miss you endlessly.
