Your Pet’s Food May Contain Toxic Selenite

90% of the commercial pet foods on the market today contain a potentially dangerous ingredient known as Sodium Selenite. This very scary and synthetically produced inorganic mineral has made its way into most of the high priced, holistic and natural brands, as well as many of the grocery store varieties!

Pet food makers often use Sodium Selenite, because it’s an inexpensive substitute for the mineral Selenium, (which in its organic form is actually very necessary for healthy cells and thyroid function). Sodium Selenite is a synthetically produced compound and should not be confused with the naturally occurring mineral which is found readily available in high quality whole foods, such as nuts, organ meats, beef, seafood, grains and vegetables.

Symptoms of selenium toxicity in pets include loss of hair and coat, brittle nails, gastrointestinal disturbances, skin rashes, and nervous disorders. When an overload of selenium (in its natural or artificial form) accumulates in the body, it can also cause damage to the heart, liver, eyes, kidneys, may contribute to the onset of diabetes and even be carcinogenic. Don’t take my word for it, you can click on this link and read an actual MSDS

The other problem with so many commercial pet foods is that they typically add between 20 and 40 isolated vitamins and minerals into their formulas, because without them, those diets would not even meet minimum government standards, required by AAFCO (The Association of American Feed Control Officials).

I have always maintained that cooking for your pets is the best way to keep them healthy. By knowing exactly what you’re giving your pets and offering real, wholesome, FRESH, balanced and natural ingredients in their diet; you’re helping them to achieve incredible levels of vibrant, glowing, great health. 1. I have a golden retreiver/border collie mix breed who is 11 years old. He has a degenerative spinal desease which luckily we have been able to keep under control with his diet, exercise and supplements, namely Royal Canin Joint Mobility Support dog food and Cosequin DS supplement daily. While I am all for the whole foods diet (I myself follow Paleo) and would welcome changing Hunter’s food, I am extremely concerned of what effects this may have on his medical issue and his overall quality of life. Periodically he has what I refer to “episodes” where he has spasms that impair his ability to go up and down the stairs and even lift his head upright. There have been 7 of these “episodes” over the past 5 years, which i have been told are remarkable considering his condition…. We all believe this has to do with his diet, and exercise (daily short walks, but no more chasing frisbies or other dogs which were his favorite pastimes) Does you food include anything that can keep these “episodes” under control? I am very apprehensive to change his diet due to his success with his present diet. I’d welcome your thoughts.

      1. Hi Laurie, I can only say that I believe that you will see an improvement in every aspect of your sweet one’s health when you feed REAL, wholesome, healthy, natural food that’s good enough for humans to eat. My Doc’s Stew is the only pet food in America that’s made under the strict guidelines of our USDA kitchen. I have been teaching people for over 30 years how to have healthy pets and when you eliminate the fillers (such as corn, wheat, rice, potatoes) – you will have a trim and fit dog. (Which of course is what you need to achieve great levels of mobility). I see no problem with the supplements and but I would also consider adding Vitamin C (which builds collagen, strengthens every cell and is an antioxidant). I understand that you are apprehensive to make a change, but when you see and sense how Doc’s Stew can help your golden/border collie to be even healthier… you will too become a believer in the power of real food. I made this new formula because there was nothing on the market that was good enough for my own pets to eat, and thousands of people have asked me over the years for a recommendation of commercial food that they could feed, as opposed to doing a homemade diet. I am so proud of everything about Doc’s Stew and I believe that you will love it too! Please keep us all posted. xoxo Andi

    2. I have an 11 year old westie who is on Royal CAnin Urinary SO food because of a bladder stone she had removed last December. I also have a 6 year old westie and a 3 year old cairn terrier. They all eat the same food. Do you have anything that would be comparable and what price?

      1. Hi Mary, your westie and your cairn terrier would be VERY happy on a homemade diet, or my Doc’s Stew. Please either get a copy of my book, and start cooking so that problems like stones become a thing of the past, or check out my food right here. There is nothing on the market that compares to Doc’s Stew, because it is made in our USDA kitchen, with only the freshest, wholesome, natural ingredients designed to support the body to be stronger. I know you’ll love what it does for your dogs. xox Andi

    3. as i use to be a big fan of halo but after they change their food it seemed that it made my gang so sick and i watched them go down in health. i just couldn’t understand this. but calling halo and asking question was like pulling a tooth from a twig… really.so i went to hme cooking again. then i had a little chihuahua that was hit with IMHA. now reading and reading after i realize from one can of halo or many anyway they all reeked with pure garlic. to the point my doga all of them threw up got sick. and one with IMHA going through a whole blood transfusion. now finding out bout sodium selenite that can cause the red blood cells to go weiry and blindness, cancer ,and the list goes on with liver and kidneys so on and so on . i sked why they used sodium selenite no response from them. because when my little one was in the hospital i id use halo for her and the other my whole gang. and then is when i started home cooking and even taking home made to the vet clinic to feed my so very sick baby girl. that is when n a few weeks i saw their tummy issues getting better and hayley was doing better her pcv was starting to go up in numbers . it takes alot of time to cook for seven fur babies all six are little fur children but i have one big girl which she is 15 years young and i stay n the kitchen alot. as hayley can not eat any garlic what so ever her her pcv starts going down so that is one thing that i can not use in home made cooking. i just hope that i am giving enough minerals i feel sure with the powered eggshell and all the organic veggies i use they get natural vitamins but th minerals worry about i can not use spirulina with hayley but do give her barley juice powder ialso use raw wheat germ from time to time but it is such a worry as i am getting up in years i am like my older girl shelly i am 80 yers old now this is such a worry as i am not trusting anything but what i cook but then i worry am i leaving something out. as with my IMHA baby you have to keep thier immune systom surpressed or they can relaspe and it can be fatal as each blood transfusion brings on more babd things.i am a pet parent about to go crazy with worry as i do not know what to do. this disease has taken alot of money and heartbreak. and i am doing what all i can to keep my little ones as healthy as i know how. but my brain isn’t working as well being stressed and so very tired. i feel at my witts end. i hope i am feeding them right.i use onl foods from earthfare in fruits, veggies, meats , eggs or what ever i buy. but am i giving a balance meal with all needed? this i question my self. i use your book daily as i have since it came out in fact i am going to buy another as i use it daily it is looking worn ..ha! with notes i jot in on all pages and ect.i hope i have made some light of what i am trying to say as i said i am so very worn out since march 9th,2012 have not had much sleep or rest and the worry is really bring me down. my little hayley i love her so and her story is if you would like to hear i will share. she was abused and she is a adopted shelter baby . but her abuse was very, very bad left with a crippled spine that even u.t. could not do surgery. now her knee caps have gone out due to weakness from this disease she can not have surgery w/ IMHA. i am so very worried about this baby i love her as human as i do all my fur babies.we all need to read what is in all dog foods and when you read food dogs are dying for how true!you are so right we all are what we eat.

      1. Hi Diana, I know that you love your babies and you are a very good mother. I think the world of you and what you’ve done for them. They are lucky to have you. Thank you for all your kind words. Keep eating well! xox Andi
