The Remarkable Min-Pin: Chico Vetter’s True Story

My min-pin was very ill. The local vet said he would soon die even though he was only 7-years old. We took him to another city and to another vet. She gave me your book.

He was not only diabetic, but had liver and pancreas disease, and was an epileptic. He was auto-immune sensitive, and could no longer take vaccinations, so we had titers tests run each year. I cooked your recipe for him every day and he lived to be 13-years old! (he had to eat 4-small meals daily and a snack at bedtime due to his diabetes). He was a beautiful Min-Pin with the "hackney" gait that makes the Miniature Pincher "King of the Toys". He died from a prolapsed trachea so the diet did take care of his other illnesses along with meds the vet prescribed. Thank you for your wonderful recipe! – Fern Vetter

You can read Chico’s whole history here. His Mom sure loved him lots and won 3rd place nationally for her story in the “Write About Your Pet Contest”.

  1. I just love the story, and had to share it with everyone! Thank you dear Fern for letting us be a part of Chico’s Remarkable Life! xoxo

    1. Andi, once again, I and my family thank you for providing REAL food with REAL nutrition and REAL balance that will indeed maintain the health of a well-pet but actually saved the life of a very ill little furry family member when his new veterinarian gave us your book. Baby Chico lived 13 years although expected to die at age 7 from several serious conditions. His doctor’s wonderful care combined with your answer to healing nutrition gave us 6 more years of joy after the “fatal” diagnosis was first received.

  2. This story just broke my heart! Chico was very lucky to have had the loving family he did. He must have been a proud young man. My 9 yr.old,6 lb. Chihuahua has trouble with his trachea from time to time. I no longer give vaccinations or chemical flea treatments, no smoking is allowed in my home, Honeybee can’t run around and get hot, his time is limited just sitting outside esp. on humid days. He eats Spot’s stew ( which he LOVES!) along with a dehydrated food. We love them while we have them…and miss them when they’re gone. Sweet Chico is now running through a field of flowers…young, happy and healthy.

    1. Cathy, thank you for your kind words. Yes, the loss is painful but the memories are wonderful! You are taking the correct path in caring for your little “senior citizen”. Baby Chico was never chemically treated for fleas or ticks nor was he around smoking. He was terribly spoiled and we did keep his weight down to 7-lbs through Spot’s Stew and treats. He had a wonderful life and gave back the same. We still miss him every day.

  3. My dearest Fern,
You love and caring helped make Chico miraculous. The dedication is unmeasured and he will be there to great you in your heavenly home.
May this Christmas season bring you lots of blessings and wonderful memories!

    1. Mary Ann,
You are such a busy lady with so much on your plate. Thank you for taking time to reply with such empathy. Also, thank you for the book that you gave me . . . it gives us hope!
Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  4. My family knew little Chico well. He was one of the cutest and well-mannered pups we have ever been around. When we would visit and his “mom” was cooking his “Spots Stew” for the week, it smelled so good we all had to have a cup. Chico would look at us as though to say, “Hey, that’s my food!”. The stew was delicious and Chico certainly was a good advertisement for the food–his coat was always shiny and he was full of energy–true “show dog” material.

  5. Thanks, Andi, but the credit all goes to you and your desire to share the Whole Pet Diet with the rest of the world. You have truly saved the lives of many sick little furry family members by creating healthy, nutritious, natural foods to get them back up on “all four paws”. Just as importantly, your foods and recipes maintain the health and weight in well-animals from infancy throughout their adult lives. Special hugs to you!

    1. Thanks so much Diane! I remember when Chico was a tiny baby and you came to visit him. He weighed less than two pounds at two months and you held him in your hands while he cuddled up to you. Your message means a lot! Love and hugs to you and your precious kitties!

  7. This was a most special dog with a most special family. I’m glad his story could be widely shared. Cheers for good pets, good people and good food!
