So many people have been writing me over the last five years to express concerns about their pets’ health and the ongoing problems they’ve been facing. The most common conditions are allergies, digestive disorders, (vomiting and diarrhea), obesity, immunity problems, diabetes, chronic skin and coat problems and eye/ear issues. After much deliberation about what I can do to help, I decided to publish a new, updated, version of my book, The Whole Pet Diet: Eight Weeks to Great Health for Dogs & Cats, (Ten Speed Press) and to go back into manufacturing solutions for people who just don’t have the time to make everything from scratch. This has been a journey and I have discovered we are able to make even more AMAZING natural health care products for dogs and cats than ever before.

My decision to get back into business is based on the fact that there is nothing that’s good enough for me to feed my own pets, and as
everyone knows: “If I couldn’t eat it myself, or use it on my own body – my pets would never get it”!

I am so glad so many of you have opted to make your own pet’s food, treats and grooming aids and I thank you for the kind words about the guidance my book has provided in building healthy pets. Your commitment to your pets has been a huge source of inspiration for this project and I am proud to once again offer a real alternative when you’re time or kitchen challenged. Sometime
in mid-March of 2012, I’ll be launching my new line of products for pets.

My other inspiration is my beautiful Border Collie rescue dog, “Doc” Holiday. Together we’ll be working and devoting our lives to the
health and longevity of pets and the people who love them! Please make sure to sign up for my newsletter today, so you’ll be the first to know everything we’re doing, and get in on the launch! http://www.thewholepetdiet.com/newsletter/

From my heart to yours, I hope to Celebrate YOUR pet’s GREAT HEALTH with Holiday Holistic Pets. Meet up with us at www.holidaypets.com very soon!

Let your pets “live it up” with the rest of your family with wholesome holiday dinners! In the right proportions, your human holiday feast can be the perfect meal for your furry friends too! Sharing is truly caring, when it comes to real food.

We can start with a few slices of traditional holiday turkey, a spoonful of simple green bean casserole (or other vegetable choice), and a dollop of sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are extremely nutritious and don’t clog the digestive tract like regular potatoes. They’re wonderfully flavorful, full of vitamin A, calcium, iron and other important minerals. Sweet potatoes also strengthen the spleen and pancreas and help the body release toxins.

While the components of the foods you choose can be somewhat interchangeable, please never feed pork
to any dog or cat; it’s more difficult to digest than fowl. Follow the rules of thumb for feeding with the following guidelines for balanced ingredient proportions. Keep your meals (for your pets) free of spices, using only simple ingredients and try not to overfeed, even though they’re going to love it a lot! Remember to Love AND Feed Your Pets With Wisdom!

Ingredient Dog Portion Cat Portion

Meat (turkey, chicken) 40% 65%

Vegetables 55% 35%

Grains or Yummy
Stuffing 5% None

Helpful Hints: The best vegetables for your pets are alkaline and won’t give them gas or upset the tummy. Use squash, zucchini, celery, green beans, carrots, but avoid broccoli, cauliflower and corn (which is hard to digest)!

Please avoid the cranberry sauce too. It’s loaded with sugar, which can upset their digestive system and cause loose stool! (This won’t be fun for anyone later on).

Of course you’ll NEVER feed chocolate or alcohol to any dog or cat. (These can be toxic and cause fatal reactions)

For Cats: Skip the grains entirely. Grains tend to make their bodies alkaline and holistic veterinarians recognize that grains can lead to urinary tract, diabetes, and kidney problems. By mashing your cat’s meal with a fork, (or
puree it altogether) – you’ll ensure they’ll eat all their veggies which help them to process the meat protein purrrrfectly!

Wishing you, your pets and your entire family a warm, wonderful Holiday!

Big HUGS,

Xoxoxo

From Solo to So Healthy!

Solo was one of those really memorable father’s day gifts that Ginger gave Gary one year. After receiving a call from a good friend who always seemed to be rescuing some animal or another, Ginger was convinced that this stray dog’s street life should come to a halt and his days of reckless panhandling were over.

At three months old, her big, goofy, black lab puppy mix weighed in at a whopping twenty-five pounds and was proving to be a real hooligan. Solo loved chasing squirrels and other varmints from the yard, and while they had hoped he would grow into a very large and adept watchdog someday, he surprised them with a gentleness that melted their hearts. Ginger never expected that their new, lively playmate came fully equipped with a slew of health problems either, so when the vet told them Solo’s immune system was severely compromised, it shook them up badly. He found hookworm, tapeworm, and whipworm; then he pointed out it was the demodectic mange causing the excessive hair loss above his eyes. The constant peeing around the house was further explained to them as a severe urinary tract infection. The vet shared that the allopathic or conventional protocol would normally include an aggressive program of antibiotics and a highly toxic pesticide dip to combat the mange. He hesitated to treat Solo with chemicals because of how low his immune system was and decided to take a more conservative (and holistic) approach. Solo was a long way from being healthy, and the vet felt he needed to be stabilized with better food and mega doses of vitamins first. They all breathed a heavy sigh of relief when their vet suggested they start with supplements before treating the mange.

Most people’s first inclinations are to race to treat symptoms with a pill or a drug, but Ginger had learned about the power of vitamins, in conjunction with diet and other naturopathic remedies. They agreed on a program of homemade chicken stew, 5,000 mg of vitamin C a day, (broken into four doses) and three fresh cloves of garlic to help expel worms. The vitamin C was prescribed specifically to boost the immune system, provide antioxidants, and help rid the body of toxins he had either inherited or acquired. During a trip to the health food store, Ginger even found a soothing topical salve made from beeswax and herbs and decided it couldn’t hurt to apply it directly to the infected area around the eyes. (I’ll be giving you the recipe for the salve in the November Newsletter coming up!). The vet anticipated improvement over the course of four to six months and asked for reports back bi-weekly.

Ginger and Gary noticed Solo improving almost immediately. The program of healthy foods and vitamins had a profound effect on his entire body. Within two weeks the tapeworms appeared to be gone. The hair above his eyes began to grow back and the chronic peeing and straining became a thing of the past. Solo’s coat grew so dramatically shiny they describe it as blue/black iridescent and he blossomed into a most magnificent creature. Six weeks later, even the vet was amazed that Solo had become a picture of health and needed no further
treatments. The blood work was perfect and he passed all tests. Great health is unmistakable; great health is totally achievable. A picture of health is painted with wisdom.

Your pet will let you know when its ears have a problem. If your pet shakes its head, digs in its ear with a back foot, or rubs its ears on carpets and sofas, these are sure signs that something needs your attention. Black specks in the ears may indicate ear mites, and an unpleasant odor is definitely a sign that there’s an issue. A conscientious owner observe and analyzes. The sooner you detect a problem, the easier and quicker it will be to remedy and the less your pet will suffer. Try making up a batch of Voyko’s herbal ear wash to soothe and eliminate most any problem ear condition. The ingredients in this effective ear relief remedy are available in most health food stores.

RECIPE FOR MAKING THE SOOTHING AND GENTLE EAR WASH SOLUTION:

2 ounces witch hazel

5 drops tea tree oil

5 drops clove oil

Directions:

Mix all the ingredients together in a clean bottle. If the bottle is cold, it may be uncomfortable for your pet, so before using it, warm the bottle in your hands for a minute or two until it’s a nice soothing body temperature, or place the bottle in a cup of warm water to take off the chill. Squirt half an eye dropper into one ear. Try to do it quickly, then gently fold the earflap over and massage for thirty seconds. Afterward, let your pet shake it out, then treat the other ear.

Note: If your pet has ear mites, you’ll need to use the solution for fourteen days straight, because every day the little nits hatch, so every day you have to get them.

By the way, I love using Voyko’s herbal ear wash in my own ears after a shower or a swim. It feels great, cleans nicely and pretty much makes my ears sing! Remember that if I couldn’t eat it, or use it on my own body, that my pets would never get it!

Get it? xoxox - Andi Brown

Bathing your dog or cat can often be stressful for both of you. Making your pets feel secure and comfortable while in the tub or the kitchen sink is as important to them as the natural shampoos you choose to get them clean. (I like to use a natural castille soap from the health food store and then I add lovely essential oils to help keep them flea free and smelling beautiful).

Before I ever give my pets a bath, I always place a thick towel on the bottom of the sink or tub so that they’re able to grab onto the material and not slip and slide around on the tile or porcelain floor. Give them something to grab onto will make the process easier for both of you. Make sure to always use comfortably warm water, and thoroughly towel dry so they don’t get chilled. Your clean pet will be a happier and healthier pet and that’s what we always strive for!

Shedding, Itching, Scratching, Dull Coat and Dandruff? Your pets have been back and forth to the vet’s office for cortisone shots and steroids? There’s not a flea in sight, but your dog keeps digging at himself all day long? You’ve tried all kinds of shots and medications and you’ve been told that it’s just an allergy and that lots of pets have them? Well, if any of these scenarios sound like your household then this next recipe is a must for every dog and cat. In five to ten days you can STOP THE MADNESS!

I can honestly tell you that the real cause of the problem is rarely addressed and will continue to manifest unless you understand how our holistic approach addresses the cause and not just masks the symptoms.

First of all, the typical culprit is usually dry food. The reason they call dry food “dry”, is because it’s all dried out. The skin
dries out, the coat dries out and the digestive system dries out. It’s just that simple. What we know is that the skin is the largest
organ of the body. It is also an eliminative organ and will struggle to release the toxic waste from the body (chemicals and toxins). Of course the ultimate solution is to eliminate the antagonistic elements altogether.
So what can you do? Well, of course I recommend feeding a healthy, homemade stew diet to begin with. But even if you can’t, but hopefully you are; then the next recipe is a supplement that will supply all the ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS, along with Vitamins A, D and E, which are so important to promote healthy skin and coat.
Here’s how to make it:

Charlotte Josephine, aka “Charlee”, “Chucklebee” 1999-2011

My Charlee Girl is the most amazing girl I have ever met. She taught me more than I ever imagined possible. A better friend there never was, even though she could never actually speak to me. To this day, though she is not with me in a physical sense, she is still teaching me to dig deeper to achieve the things that are important…and how to be happy and “wag my tail” at EVERYTHING!

On Nov. 22, 2010 my baby girl was diagnosed with a nasal tumor that ended up being a bone sarcoma (cancer). That same day while Charlee was undergoing a CT Scan and biopsy, my Mom and I headed to “Whole Foods” to try to distract ourselves and help pass the time. As I looked at some books on nutrition, I had already begun praying that Charlee would be okay. It was at that very time that I found a book… The Whole Pet Diet by Andi Brown.
Something about the book in my hand convinced me that this was what I needed to buy that day! Honestly,
the fact that Andi’s name was the same as mine may be what convinced me…it was that simple of a reason…and I would come to find an answer to my prayer. My world had been recently devastated by the suicide of a very close friend, and Charlee’s unconditional love was there to comfort me. Now the thought of losing Charlee was unbearable.

Within 5 days my Dad and I had made Charlee’s first double batch of Spot’s Chicken Stew…she LOVED it! 2 days after Char’s first taste of stew and with Andi’s book clenched in my hand, my Mom, Charlee, and I traveled back to MedVet to meet with a Radiation Oncologist. My stomach churned as we went through the entire consult with the specialist. When I showed the Doctor the book she surprised me by stating that she believed in nutritional therapy herself. The specialist took her time and I really appreciated her expertise, but something just didn’t feel right about her plans for radiation.

After searching Andi Brown’s website I decided to e-mail Andi to see if she had any advice. Not being sure if people really answered these types of e-mails, my heart pounded as I got back online to see if there was a reply…and there was!!! Within a week Andi offered to call and speak to me as I had to make a decision about the radiation treatment. I spoke to Andi for about 45 min. and by the time I got off of the phone I had decided that the right choice was the diet over the radiation in hopes that Char Char would be cured. I truly believe it was the right decision as Charlee spent the rest of her days happy, pain free and eating the best she ever had in her life.

Through Charlee I was able to meet some everlasting friends; Andi Brown, Doctor Pam (our holistic vet), and Beth (Charlee’s friend who met with her weekly to do energy work). Our prayers were answered once again, on March 9, 2011, the day that Char Char faded easily from Earth into Heaven on her own with her 3 sisters, 1 brother, and CJ at her side.
I scanned through Charlee Girl’s journal for all of her favorite treats and recipes and some of which were created in her memory. They have been taste tested and approved by her sisters and brother: Krystee, Rigby, Carlos, and Rosee the cat!
